Mamma Mia!

Put together by Abba’s own Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroup’s songs into a threadbare plot. It goes a little like this: Young Sophie is getting married and she’s trying to identify which of three men is her father. That’s about it. Wisely, the musical doesn’t mess around with the songs, save for the insertion of some dialogue or for having some of them performed by a man (it works amazingly well). Abba fans will jump on this import of the London production, but traditional fans of musical theater should consider it as well. After all, Andersson and Ulvaeus’s songs have always felt as if they were more than isolated pop gems and actually belonged to a longer narrative.

The band began to come together in 1977, when drummer Stewart Copeland left his former band and joined with Sting to begin to work on some songs. Each of them shared a heavy influence from the world of reggae, and that shared vision led to many of the tones and beats in their upcoming tracks.

After bouncing around for a few years, the band ultimately began to gain acclaim by touring Australia, which was the first country in which they gained a loyal following. Their live shows were widely-attended, and for the first time, The Police tickets were in demand. Their first album release, Outlandos d’Amour, was released in 1978 under a very tight budget and much struggle, but the release ultimately hit several charts and gained some fame for the band.

The following year, the band released Reggatta de Blanc, and this release was even more successful than their initial cut, as the band had the backing of a big-time record label at this point and enjoyed the fruits of a much more highly-budgeted publicity campaign. Their third release, Zenyatta Mondatta, which came out in 1980, and it was another success. Another album, Ghost in the Machine, released in 1981, climbed to the top of the charts in 1981, and all of this success set the stage for their next album, which ultimately cemented The Police as legends.

Superstardom

In 1983, the band released an album that would go a long way towards defining the music of that time period. Synchronicity was an album that shot to the top of the charts in several countries around the world, contained several singles that rose to the top of the charts, and made the band a household name in nearly every home that had a radio.

The band staged a worldwide tour in furtherance of this album, but after it competed in 1984, the band members slowly-but-surely began to move in separate directions. Although they never “officially” broke up, they never recorded another full-length studio album.

Results of Success

The band got together every now and then for a few benefit concerts, as Sting was and is extremely active with several causes, and ultimately, The Police were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003, and several documentaries were produced that traced the steps of the band towards their ultimate stardom and fame.

In 2007, The Police will be getting together one more time for another tour. This tour is being met with a high degree of anticipation, and the mere fact that The Police tickets are available once again is sure to fill stadiums around the world.

The Story

The Lion King is set on the plains of Africa, and the main character is Simba, a young lion cub who is someday going to take over the throne for his father, Mufasa. Simba is a happy, curious cub who’s a bit precocious by nature, and sometimes his curiosity gets the better of him.

Simba also has a rival in the plot in the form of his extremely jealous brother, Scar. Scar wants nothing more than to be the Lion King himself, and he plots to usurp the throne. Scar pursues this plan by arranging a stampede that tragically kills Mufasa, and then Scar deviously convinces Scar that their father’s death was Simba’s fault.

Simba is crestfallen by this “realization,” and decides to run away from home. This development is especially heartbreaking because Simba leaves behind two characters who were very close to him in his mother, Sarabi and his best friend, Nala.

Simba eventually encounters a warthog named Pumbaa and a meerkat named Timon, and he spends the rest of his childhood with them. Simba eventually grows older and stronger, and one day, his long-lost friend Nala. Nala tells Simba that Scar has succeeded in his plot and has become the Lion King. Nala further convinces Simba that he needs to return to his roots and challenge Scar for the throne. We’d tell you how the story is resolved, but you’d be much better-served by securing The Lion King tickets for yourself to see this classic in-person.

Production History

The original stage production opened in Minneapolis in 1997, and after early and tremendous success, the show moved to Broadway in October of that same year. The play has been running continuously there ever since. The Lion King has also enjoyed long-standing runs in London, Toronto and Sydney.

Overall, the musical has won six Tony Awards, and The Lion King tickets continue to be an enormous draw in theaters all over the world.

The Story

The cast of Avenue Q is filled by puppets, although these are hardly the puppets millions have come to know on the television show. Avenue Q is a true spoof of Sesame Street, and the story centers on the main character, Princeton. Princeton has just graduated from college, and he has no money, as he’s just getting his start in life.

Given his lack of funds, Princeton moves into a New York City apartment in the only neighborhood he can afford, and that apartment is on Avenue Q. Princeton slowly gets to know the other characters on his block, including Brian, an unemployed but laid back kind of guy who’s engaged, Kate Monster, a teaching assistant who’s unhappy with her lack of a boyfriend, Rod, the secretly-gay investment banker/Republican, Nicky the slacker, and a host of other interesting characters.

The basic premise of the story is life’s struggles as they are encountered by young adults just getting their start in life. We’d tell you how the story plays out, but you’d be better off getting Avenue Q tickets for yourself to see just how this diverse and sometimes-racy neighborhood moves in the city that never sleeps.

Parallels with Sesame Street

There are several somewhat direct parallels between the play and the television show, and anyone familiar with the children’s classic will recognize them instantly. Rod and Nicky are roommates, and they are clearly a parody of Bert and Ernie, with the most interesting twist to this parallel being that Rod is gay.

Another character, Trekkie Monster, is a spin-off of the Cookie Monster, and even the way the songs are sung and put together are eerily reminiscent of the television show. The most obvious connection is the use of puppets.

However, this is where the similarities end, as the theme of the story is quite mature. There are explicit lyrics in the songs, full “puppet” nudity, and strong sexual content between some of the characters.

Overall, Avenue Q tickets will take you back in time with its parallels with Sesame Street, but will also mesmerize you with the modern and often-hilarious twists on the original story idea.

History of the Story

The character of Tarzan first appeared in a book series written by Edgar Rice Burroughs, and the first edition of this volume of stories was published in 1912. Over the next 50+ years, 24 different stories appeared on the scene, and the books were popular worldwide.

Over time, and directly as a result of the influence put forth by these books, several Tarzan stories were produced in different mediums. There were Tarzan radio programs, Tarzan cartoons for children, Tarzan television series and Tarzan movies. The stories were different in terms of their specific plots, but the main character, Tarzan, is always at the center of the action, and the theme of fantasy and man vs. beast is always present as well.

The story moved to Broadway on May 10, 2006, when it opened at the Richard Rodgers Theatre to much success. The book for the play was formulated by David Henry Hwang, and the music for this production was written Grammy winner Phil Collins. Given demand for Tarzan tickets, the show continues to run today.

The Plot

The plot of the musical follows the story line in the latest Disney movie, and serves as more of an introduction/overview of Tarzan and his life. The setting is 1888 off the coast of Africa, where Tarzan is an infant and he and his parents escape a burning ship and build a simple life for themselves in the nearby jungle.

Soon afterwards, Tarzan’s parents are attacked and killed by a leopard named Sabor, but Tarzan is spared. An ape who lives in the area and has lost her own child to Sabor hears the child crying and investigates. She finds Tarzan and attempts to adopt him, and after some resistance is granted her wish.

Tarzan grows up with the apes and ultimately earns their respect. As he moves into adulthood, English explorers appear on the scene, and this is quite a revelation to Tarzan, who has thought of himself as an ape his whole life. Through much conflict, Tarzan ultimately becomes King of the Apes, and Jane, the beautiful female explorer, falls in love with him.

We’d tell you how the story ends, but you’d be much better off securing Tarzan tickets for yourself and seeing this timeless classic unfold before your eyes at the theater.
